Musicals and teenagers aren’t necessarily two things you often think of in the same sentence. Today’s teens have grown up with television, movies, and video games; all fast-paced and full of special effects. Even though sitting through movies lasting several hours is no problem to most teens, sitting through a stage production—like a musical—is a different story entirely. With no flashy cinematography and only one vantage point (their seat in the audience), teens need musicals with a great storyline that can keep their attention. This is a tall order, but there are 5 musicals that fit the bill. Empathetic characters, intriguing scandals, well-known tunes, and fun dance routines top our list:
1. Wicked. Essentially a story from the Wizard of Oz – taken from the vantage point of the witches, Wicked tells the stories of the young witches who would ultimately become the green-skinned Wicked Witch of the West and the well-known Glinda, Good Witch of the North. This musical is a great choice for a teen’s first musical because it is premised on something they are probably familiar with (the Wizard of Oz), but the story is presented from a new angle. This helps them follow along with the storyline and characters, making their transition into musicals a little less confusing.
2. Oliver. A musical based on a work by Charles Dickens that premiered in 1960 might seem like an odd choice for this list. It may well overlap with your teen’s literature class reading assignment, but Oliver is a sweet story about a young English orphan who ends up in with a group of pickpockets. Teenagers are likely to feel for poor little Oliver and their attention will come with their feelings of empathy.
3. West Side Story. Like Romeo and Juliet, but in plainer English. This story has the tragic, forbidden love theme that is very popular with a reoccurring teenage condition: being lovesick. Add in some of the best dance numbers in musical history and this is a great musical for mature teens who can deal with a story that doesn’t end on the happiest of notes.
4. Annie. Much like Oliver will tug on the heartstrings, little orphan Annie is another loveable kid who will capture your attention as she tries to survive life in an orphanage during the Great Depression. With classic tunes like “Hard Knock Life” and “Tomorrow,” this is more a piece of pop culture than just another musical.
5. Chicago. A riveting story about two young, beautiful murderesses that end up on death row together, Chicago features the legendary Bob Fosse’s jazz dance routines. Teens will get caught up in the exciting storyline, full of love and murder. And anyone with an interest in dance will be blown away by the dance numbers.
